Construction of the Kazan Optical-Mechanical Plant (KOMZ) was started and in 1939, on the eve of the Great Patriotic War it was renamed Factory Number 237. Production was launched in 1940 and PU sniper scopes were released starting in late 1942. The bulk of these scopes were the PU SVT model for the Mosin Nagant 91/30 sniper rifle, with the remainder being the PU 91/30 model. During 1943-44, Factory # 237 released more than 39,000 PU sniper scopes most of which were destroyed during the war.
